Crop and Export Report 2019, Week 43

EDITORIAL

The Chilean blueberry season is progressing with some difficulties in the middle of the social crisis that is happening in Chile right now. However, the total exported volumes are higher than the previous year in the same week. So far, up to week 42, 901 tons of fresh blueberries have been exported. 92% more than the previous year. The airfreights represent 72% of the volume, while the rest are maritime shipments mainly from the port of San Antonio. From the total exported, 230 tons are organic blueberries, this represents a 130% increase compared to the quantity exported up to the same week of last year.

This week might be more critic in terms of export logistics due to the short strikes reported in some maritime ports and the curfew imposed in different provinces across the country. However, good news are reported with respect to the return to normal of different activities, the decrease of the length of the curfew and the continuation of the labors in different ports after the strikes. Despite the previously mentioned, the blueberry exports have not been majorly affected. In part, because the export volume is still low, and because most of the freights are via-air, while the airport continues with normal activity, in the same way of other ports such as Valparaiso. A further analysis will be delivered in the next edition.

With respect to the harvests, the temperatures have risen in the last weeks, allowing a god ripening of the fruit and a normal harvest progress in the north zone of the country (Coquimbo and Valparaiso), mainly with early varieties such as Jewel, Rocio and Emerals.
